First day

First project

For this project we where asked to mess around with different objects originally to create organic spaces and structure. From these forms that be made we then had to turn them in to structures and buildings. We used a variation of materials such as plastic, foam board and paper

Fashion Weekly Review

I was surprised how much I enjoyed fashion week. As this was an area I had not explored before, I was unsure how I would work in that environment. I enjoyed how we took figures which were already clothed and had to try and reform or add things to them to change their outfit completely. I thought that texture was something that would be interesting to explore, that lead me to make texture my focus of the week. What I liked most about this week was working on a large scale and being very structural. I also liked how I was forced to think through and progress to one final idea. However what I didn't like about the fashion week is how tight and to the point the briefs seemed to be, this lead me to be more to the point and precise. this attention to detail is something that I will try and continue to work through out my chosen path way.

I think as my work in fashion was so structural and strong this lead me to create my decision of making 3D my chosen path way,

Fashion -Day Three

In preparation for the final day of Fashion we had to think about the kind of structure/ garment which we wanted to create. After my work on day two I wanted to look at something that sat on your shoulders and was made out of brown paper. I also wanted to make it look quite masculine and strong. This lead to me devising this design. Which I created to look like this

Fashion -Day Two

On the second day after looking at what we created yesterday we had to initially take images from magazines and add on top of them to create new and clothing and structures looking again at pattern, texture and form. I tried to see what I thought worked well yesterday and re-create it. I also wanted to look at little details not necessarily a whole item of clothing.

After that we had to focus on one area of the body and try and devise various different structures or clothing to be wore on this area of the body.  I chose to look at creating a shoulder piece. I wanted to take inspiration from the rest of my work in the fashion week. This is why I looked a lot at shapes which I could repeat and I wanted to mainly work with different forms of paper. I wanted my piece to be very textured however still look quite strong and very structured.

After that we had look at our favourite design from our first task and then create simple cloths from the pattern. I chose to look at ripped brown paper and photocopy it only in black and white, this came out in various different tones of grey. I liked this because I thought it did seem to have a fabric like look and also had a great depth however it would be very difficult to create this as a fabric or texture.

Fashion -Day One

On the first day of Fashion we firstly looked at creating Marquette’s of clothing we would like to create looking at pattern, texture and structure. I wanted to bring all elements together, that is why I create a dress which had three layers all with holes so that you could see through to the different textures. I also made it a very large skirt so that structurally it was quite powerful. I also created a dress that was like a coil of ripped paper, this was because I really like the texture of the edge of the ripped paper and I liked the repeating of the patter. Finally as men’s wear is something I'm interested in I wanted to create something very masculine and structural.

From this we had to repeat one of the Marquette’s we made 20 times on various scales. I found this challenging as my design was already very large and had various details. After this in pair we worked with what others had create to make an item of clothing or structure based on various different words.

Finally we worked with our pattern on the pieces we create to make any item of clothing we liked, this is what we created.

Photographers Gallery

My favourite exhibition in The Photographers Gallery was titled Mark Neville: Deeds Not Words. I found this exhibition pertically moving because of the issues it was trying to address. Initially most of the pictures seems to be quite humours such as Corby Carnival Queens go bowling.  However the collection of work was trying to raise awareness of the issues around the handing of toxic waste and the reuse of contaminated land. People and culture was effected by this toxic wasted lead to several babies being born with serious birth defects. All of Neville's work in this collection are very strong aesthetically due to the saturation of the colours. The compassion of Cobry Carnival Queens go bowling is very full, which makes it interesting to look at as so much is going on. This is in strong contrast to other work in this collection such as Ben bursting a balloon, which is very simple aesthetically. 'Ben's' eyes create a contextion with the audiences as he is looking directly at the lens. This is also supported by the dark background the audiences is forced to focus on Ben. When I first looked at this photo I did not initially realise the birth defect on 'Ben's' hand. I think this is due to the action of popping a balloon and the look in Ben's eyes.

The Photographers Gallery also had an exhibiting across two floor which had asked people to take a photo on the same day every year over several years, this was called Mass Observation: This is your photo. This was interesting as you gained an insight into peoples lives from all different walks of life. It was interesting to see how their lives had changed over the years. I also thought what was engaging about the piece was what different people chose to be their picture of the day that year.

Lens Based Media -Weekly Review

It was interesting in Lens Base Media week to forces on narrative so strongly and less about our practical skills in the path way. I enjoyed trying to create a narrative in 6 images. I think the main reason I enjoyed this was that it challenged me to think so strongly about my narrative and story line. I also enjoyed and we constantly has to crit each others work. This lead to my idea be really strongly developed and I believe to be a clear and power narrative. The crits lead me to think about thing I did not initially think about such a characters and camera angles. I hope that I can continue to do often crits on my work in my chosen pathway. Initially we spent time building ideas around narrative and characters, this was helpful as it lead me to think more creatively and think more cleverly about the narrative which I was going to create, I want to try and take activities like this into my chosen path way so that I continue to think very creatively. Len Based Media week was really helpful in leading me to be creative and more free which is something I want to keep and further explore on my time on my foundation.

Lens Based Media -Day Three

Our final day in lens based media, we drew all our skill we had developed over the passed two days in still image and story, we had to create an narrative which could be effectively reflected in six images. I devised a story about the transition of a £10 note and what money can be exchanged for. I took 30 images so that I could test out which works and what was effective. I then create my six image story, which then we got into group of six so that we could have a crit. The Crit was extremely helpful as the group helped me devise way to reflect my narrative more effectively and main to reflect more of the character in the single shots. The crit was also helpful as the group had interesting ideas how I could shot things differently. This lead my final idea to be the most effective and the narrative to be clear.

Lens Based Media -Day Two

In the second day of Lens Based Media we mainly fouced on narrative and story. Firstly we watch short films so that we started thinking about a story and how it is structured. We watched a short film called Fridge which was very effective in getting the audiences to context with the characters quickly as well as having extreme highs and lows in a short film. I found it interesting how there was little dialogue and was in black and white, I believe this drew the audiences in and made them more forced on the story.
After this we did a seres of actives to try and generate character, location and relationship between them which we could use to create a short story.

Lens Based Media -Day One

On the first day of Lens based media we explored still image, looking at images that we took of our habit, I decide to focus on a image from my home of books on a book shelf. I chose this image as it generated the most emotional contextion and I believe strongly reflects my home. We then had to draw and paint this image on a huge scale of A1. I found this punctually challenging, working to such a huge scale and also painting as it not one of my strengths. We then had to create a view finder and look at sections of the image and then reflect how this would create a different emotion to the picture as a whole.

Graphics Weekly Review

I really enjoyed the Graphics week, especially how we explored the idea of graphic image and graphic font. Creating faces from other images on the first day was my personal favour thing to do as it was an interesting area to explore and also makes me question the idea of beauty in society. It was interesting to see how similar all the women's features look when you take their faces apart, it was also interesting introducing text to support the image. We then went on to explore font, I enjoyed experimenting with different materials to look for inspiration to create our own font. I used a messy pieces of string to inspire my font, this lead my font to very soft and loopy. This font lead me too look at Marian Bantjes work, where she conbindes font and patten to create a strong graphic image.

I pertically found watching the Milton Glaser -point video interesting as he discussed graphics and art, this lead me too at the May 1968 strike posters and their bold and graphic images, this made me think of work done by Barbara Kruger as like the strike poster the use of a bold image and font are used together to make a powerful statement. This lead me to want to use image and font together for my final poster which we created on day three.

I think I enjoyed exploring graphics as graphic work always had a direct link with the public and is one of the only art forms that is constantly taking in by people almost subconsciously
